The reason why Marcelo Bielsa will not manage Mexico
Marcelo Bielsa and Antonio Mohamed were considered at some point to take over the Mexico national team job.
The Mexican Football Federation had six candidates to manage the national team and start the new World Cup cycle. Amongst the options were Marcelo Bielsa and Antonio Mohamed, but it has been reported that both managers have fallen out of the race.
According to TUDN, the federation decided not to sit down with Marcelo Bielsa because he is not up to date with the clubs in Liga MX nor the players available. So it would have taken him some time to catch up with the World Cup scheduled to start in three-and-a-half years and not a lot of time to work before the start of the Nations League and Gold Cup tournaments.
What is Mexico looking for?
So the Mexican Football Federation wants to appoint an experienced head coach with vast knowledge of the national players in Liga MX and the ones that play in Europe’s top tier. Another manager that is no longer being considered for the job is Antonio Mohamed who has not managed a team in Mexico since he was sacked from Monterrey in 2020.
Who are the main candidates?
It is expected that the Mexican federation confirms their new head coach this week so he can start the World Cup cycle. El Tri’s first official match of the year is on March 23 against Surinam and three days later against Jamaica in the start of the CONCACAF Nations League campaign. It has also being reported that the Miguel Herrera, Guillermo Almada and Ignacio Ambríz are in pole position to manage the national team.
