The retractable field of the new Bernabeu

In this video by Javier Caireta, we can see an in-depth 3D model of exactly how the new Santiago Bernabeu Stadium’s retractable field will work.

On his Youtube channel, Nave Del Madridismo, Javier Caireta shared a video which shows the inner workings of Real Madrid’s new Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Bernabeu’s retractable field

The in-depth 3D rendering shows how the retractable field can be changed to fit any kind of event. The entire process takes about six hours. There are six “trays” that can be stored up to nearly 30 meters underground below the stadium. Beneath the surface, the grass is treated with climate control, an irrigation system, and LED/UV lights. A hydraulic lift will be able to take the trays back up to the surface as necessary.

This multi-purpose stadium in the heart of Madrid will be able to host any kind of event - not just soccer. From baseball to American football, to concerts, the possibilities are endless with this new technology.

There is still work to be done on the retractable roof, but the stadium is nearing completion. Real Madrid hopes to have all construction complete and the stadium ready to go by the start of the 2023-24 season.
