The teams that could provide minutes to Sergiño Dest this season
The United States men’s national team defender did not play in Barcelona’s first game of the 2022/23 LaLiga season against Rayo Vallecano.
FC Barcelona tied 0-0 against Rayo Vallecano in their LaLiga opener at Camp Nou and Sergiño Dest was not included in the roster on the first matchday of the season. Barça’s coach, Xavi Hernández, decided to give Ronald Araujo the start as a right-back and later on Sergi Roberto replaced Andreas Christensen and took over that position, Araujo shifting over to center-back.
Dest future up in the air
This could mean that Xavi is not convinced by Dest, who also didn’t see a lot of playing time during the pre-season, and he could be on his way out of the club. The United States international could become Barça’s fourth choice at right-back because it has been reported that the Catalans could sign Héctor Bellerín before the end of the transfer window.
Dest is in search of minutes so he can arrive in top form at the FIFA World Cup in November with the United States and keep a starting role in the team managed by Gregg Berhalter. The other players that can replace Dest in the starting XI for the USMNT are Joe Scally and DeAndre Yedlin.
Where could Dest land this summer?
Manchester United is a real option for Dest to see more playing time and reunite with Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils are struggling to keep clean sheets this season and on Saturday lost 4-0 to Brentford, with the defense having a terrible performance. Dest could improve the backline and adapt quickly to the Premier League style.
Real Betis is another option for Dest because Bellerín could return to Barça this summer. Other destinations for the 21-year-old are Borussia Dortmund and Valencia CF. Time is running out for Dest to exit Barcelona in search of more minutes and secure a starting role with the USMNT in the upcoming World Cup.
