The tug-of-war continues between Mexico and the US for two players
Following the debuts of Alejandro Zendejas and Brandon Vázquez, both national teams want them to make a decision regarding their future.
The importance of January’s camp for the United States men’s national team is to give the opportunity for young talented players to see playing time with the first team. This was the case of Mexican-Americans Brandon Vázquez and Alejandro Zendejas, who made their debut in the 2-1 defeat over Serbia at BMO stadium last week.
Leaving aside the result, the positive notes were that Vázquez scored his first goal with the United States and Zendejas went the full 90 minutes and was one of the best players on the pitch. Now they will have to make a decision about their commitment to the United States or Mexico before the first international break in March.
Decision Day is coming
Following his debut, Alejandro Zendejas said it was an honor to wear the United States men’s national team jersey for the first time, but now is not the time to make any decision about his future at the international level. “I am happy. It is an honor and I am very proud. I am just enjoying the moment,” said the Club América winger following the loss to Serbia.
It seems that Zendejas wants to leave the door open to a possible call up to the Mexican national team and he will wait to talk to the man in charge once the federation appoints a new manager. That doesn’t seem to be the case for Brandon Vázquez, who was very active on social media during his time with the United States and after scoring his first goal.
“I’m focused on the present. We will have important games with FC Cincinnati, but I have not made up my mind [about representing the US or Mexico]. All I care about is the support of my family when the time comes to make a decision,” said the striker following the 0-0 draw with Colombia over the weekend.
