Update:

The 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup—the 61st edition of the region’s top club competition is hotting up. The identities of all 16 teams who have advanced from the first round are now known.

The Round of 16 kicks off on March 10 with two games - Monterrey host the defending champions Cruz Azul at Estadio BBVA while LAFC take on Costa Rica’s Alajuelense in Los Angeles.

There are several reasons why winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup is high up on most teams’ priorities. The biggest being that it is the gateway to two major FIFA tournaments - as well as a new registry in their honors list, the winners will also gain a place at the 2026 Intercontinental Cup and 2029 Club World Cup.

A total of nine MLS teams have advanced to the Last 16 - the most in tournament history. Among them Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and two former champions: LA Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders.

Mexican teams dominant

However, it’s a competition that has been largely dominated by Mexican teams. There are five Liga MX teams in the Last 16 mix, including the two record seven-time winners: Cruz Azul and América. Monterrey, Toluca and Tigres complete the Mexican line-up - one which has a combined 22 titles between them.

Alajuelense, who play Costa Rica’s Primera División, have reached the final five times, lifting the trophy in 1986 and 2004. LAFC stand in the way of a place in the quarter finals.

Jamaican contenders Mount Pleasant will be keen to build on their Caribbean Cup success. First, they need to get past their tie against LA Galaxy.
