Ciudad de México Update:

Memories can be short lived in Mexican soccer. El Rebaño Sagrado defeated León 2-1 in a friendly this weekend, with goals from Cade Cowell and Armando González, but the victory is not enough to paper over the cracks after a disastrous 2025 Apertura. The ‘rojiblancos’ have had more stumbles than positive steps (4 losses, one win and a draw) with performances that leaves doubts heading into Saturday’s Clásico Nacional.

América also took advantage of the break as the Eagles flew to the United States and fell 3-1 to DC United, a result that sparked immediate criticism. Despite the loss to the MLS side, the CDMX based side are second place in the table and have recorded 5 wins and 2 draws.

History favours América

El Clásico, however, is not about draws or friendlies, but it is about history and precedents. In the last 10 Liga MX matches, the Águilas have been more than dominant, as against their hated rival, they have only accumulated one defeat and recorded 6 wins.

  • Guadalajara 0-1 America 05/18/23
  • Guadalajara 2-4 America 03/18/23
  • America 2-1 Guadalajara 09/17/22

Mexico will grind to a halt on Saturday as all eyes focus on América and Chivas on the pitch: two teams with two very different realities and despite contrasting results in two friendlies that don’t change the equation too much and a Clásico Nacional that, as always, promises to leave scars.
