Former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain head coach Thomas Tuchel has reportedly agreed to take charge of the England national team.

The Three Lions have been without a permanent head coach since Gareth Southgate decided to step down after the summer’s European Championship final loss to Spain. After weeks of speculation, The Times reports that Tuchel has now concluded a deal with the Football Association.

Tuchel is also thought to have received interest from Manchester United in recent months, although the Premier League club opted instead to keep faith in Erik ten Hag.

If Tuchel is confirmed as England head coach he will become the third foreign manager to take the role, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

What could Thomas Tuchel’s salary be with England?

There are few roles in soccer with a higher degree of scrutiny than the head coach of the English national team. However during his time with Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Munich, Tuchel will have grown accustomed to working in high-pressure environments.

Tuchel would be expected to sign a contract spanning at least two years, covering the next World Cup in 2026. Most likely, he would sign a four-year contract that also spans the home European Championships, hosted jointly by England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

In terms of his salary, Tuchel will command one of the highest wages in world soccer. Gareth Southgate’s most recent contract extension, penned in 2021, was worth a reported £5 million ($6.5m) annually, putting him among the highest-paid international managers in the world.

Tuchel, who comes to the role with greater pedigree and a better track record, will likely expect to exceed Southgate’s previous salary. If he is the man to finally end England’s long wait for international silverware, the FA will consider it money well spent.
