Tiago Volpi and Liga MX’s historic goal-scoring goalkeepers
The Toluca goalkeeper of the Red Devils is now the Liga MX’s second top scoring keeper not far behind Jorge Campos.
Tiago Volpi has taken no time to become a talking point since returning to the Liga MX back in September. The Brazilian goalkeeper has made history with Toluca and could soon reach even greater heights in Mexican soccer as one of the most prolific goal-scoring goalkeepers in league history. He was on target again this weekend and is slowly creeping up on the player in first place, Jorge Campos.

The Acapulcan goalkeeper, who retired in January 2004, scored a total of 46 goals in his entire career. However, it needs to be stressed that Campos also featured as an outfield player - in fact he was deployed as a forward when he was starting out and couldn’t carve out a regular place in his natural position. He played several games at club level in an outfield role and capped 129 times at international level by Mexico.
Just behind the historic Campos is Tiago Volpi who has scored a total of 13 goals with Toluca - 11 of them in the Liga MX. The most recent was a crucial 71st minute penalty against Tigres at the Nemesio Díez on Saturday which served to hand the Red Devils all three points. His remaining goals were in the Leagues Cup tournament against MLS sides.
Federico Vilar, René Higuita, Miguel Calero and Oscar Pérez only scored two goals for their teams, while Moisés Muñoz, Alfredo Talavera, Antonio Rodríguez, Carlos Acevedo and Julio González complete the list with one goal each. Muñoz’s epic, stoppage-time winner in the Clausura 2013 final against Cruz Azul went viral on social media.
As for Tiago Volpi, Toluca was not his first club in Mexico. The 33-year-old keeper joined Querétaro in 2015, spending three years with the Gallos Blancos before returning to his home country to begin a one-year loan move to São Paulo. On his return to Mexico in May 2022, he joined Nacho Ambriz’s Toluca, memorably scoring a penalty against Santos Laguna in the Clausura quarter finals in his debut season.
