Ciudad de México Update:

Later this evening, another chapter of Liga MX will close with the second leg of the Apertura 2025 Final between Toluca and Tigres.

The university team heads into the decisive match with a one-goal advantage from the first leg and a chance to capture its ninth championship—on a stage that has historically favored them: their opponent’s ground, Estadio Nemesio Díez.

Road warriors by tradition

What sets Tigres apart is their uncanny ability to win titles away from home. Of their eight Liga MX championships, six were clinched on the road—a stat that underscores their competitive grit and knack for thriving under hostile conditions, where crowd pressure never rattled them.

Only twice have the “felinos” celebrated in front of their fans at El Volcán. In the Apertura 2011, they defeated Santos Laguna, and in the Apertura 2016, they toppled América. Those victories laid the foundation for a decade of dominance and cemented the team’s winning identity.

First stars forged away from home

Tigres’ championship story began far from San Nicolás. In the 1977-78 season, they claimed their first title after a 1-1 draw at Pumas’ Olímpico Universitario, following a 2-0 win in the first leg. A few years later, in 1981-82, Atlante fell to Tigres in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 aggregate tie.

Fast forward to the Apertura 2015, when Tigres once again lifted the trophy away from home—this time against Pumas, in a dramatic shootout after a memorable second leg in Mexico City. Two years later came one of the most iconic triumphs in club history: a 2-1 win over Monterrey in the only “Final Regia,” played at the Steel Giant during the Apertura 2017.

Legacy of road finals

The Clausura 2019 added another chapter, with a scoreless draw against León at the Nou Camp—enough to secure the crown. And in the Clausura 2023, Tigres staged yet another epic comeback, overturning a two-goal deficit against Chivas at Akron Stadium to win 3-2, reaffirming their reputation as specialists in conquering finals away from home.
