Tigres vs Chivas, summary: score, goals & highlights | 2023 Liga-MX final first leg

Update:
A defensive display from Guadalajara provided a huge result for Veljko Paunovic and his boys. All to play for on Sunday.

Tigres held at home by Chivas: as it happened

Winning isn't always pretty

They huffed and they puffed, but in the end the house wasn't blown down. Indeed, on a night when Tigres had it all to do, the task proved a little too tough as Chivas stood resolute in defense.

Never quite playing openly, but never parking the bus either, a solid display handed Guadalajara the draw with the second leg to come on Sunday.

As for Tigres, they will rue a number of half chances. Indeed, the side from Monterrey seemed to be always in a hurry and perhaps had the likes of Cordova and Gignac taken a little more time with the opportunities that fell to them, the game could have gone very differently.

Ultimately, Chivas were able to grind out the draw as they look to match Club America on 13 for the joint record of most Clausura titles ever. While there were few chances for either side on the night, the team from Guadalajara have set themselves up for the home return.

We hope you enjoyed our coverage of the game and with that we wish you a very good night. See you Sunday!

Paul Rudder
45

Tigres get us started in this second half with the score tied at 0-0.

as.com

We're back

The players are on the field and we're ready to go for the second half!

Paul Rudder

It's been a tussle

The first half hasn't provided us with many chances in truth and the ones that we've seen were essentially the result of defensive errors or fortune.

With that said, what the teams have lacked in precision in front of goal, they've made up for with true intensity.

This second leg match has been contested at a frantic pace, which perhaps is what ironically has led to the lack of goals.

Ultimately, Tigres has no choice but to go for it as they trail 2-1 following the first leg loss. Expect fireworks!

Paul Rudder

Should've, could've, would've

What was a clear gift from Gorriaran was somehow not accepted by Brizuela. He'll be ruing that miss if this game doesn't go the way of Chivas in the end.

as.com
45

With less than a minute of stoppage time played, the referee brings the first half to a close. It's 0-0 for the moment!

Paul Rudder
44

Paul Rudder
43

It's quickly broken up And Tigres will play home.

Paul Rudder
42

Chivas almost manage to cut into the box, but it's Angulo who brings it to an end and immediately releases Cordova.

Paul Rudder
42

No scrap that, the referee has now given a goal kick.

Paul Rudder
41

We're approaching the end of regulation time and in truth there has been no clear cut chance in this first half. None the less it's Tigres who break to the right and they will have a corner.

Paul Rudder
40

Cordova onc again released on the left, but he's quickly shutdown by his shadow, Sepulveda. This is proving to be an interesting battle.

Paul Rudder
39

It's wasted and Cordova breaks. He plays to Gignac on the right side who then crosses the ball...into the stands. The disappointment from the fans is audible.

Paul Rudder
39

A poorly taken corner, but it's clear and Chivas will have a throw in.

Paul Rudder
38

Chivas have won a corner and it's Alvarado who will take it. Can they produce something here?

Paul Rudder
38

Fontes with a heavy foul on Guzman, but there is no card. Surprising

Paul Rudder
37

Orozco has a look at goal and lines up a shot from at least 40 yards out. It was nowhere close and by the looks of his teammates, we'll be hoping he doesn't try that again.

Paul Rudder
36

Cordova is played down the left again but Sepulveda is once again up to the task. He's having a good game. Chivas will have a goal kick.

Paul Rudder
34

Chivas regain the ball but as quickly as they do, they give it away. This time it's Brizuela who is the culprit as he tries to change the ball to the left.

Paul Rudder
33

Quinones receives the throw and manages to play Cordoba into space, the midfielders cross is once again dangerous, but nobody is their to receive as it passes infront of goal.

Paul Rudder
32

In the end the throw goes begging and Chivas will have a goal kick. Guzman launches it deep and they concede a throw.

Paul Rudder
32

Carioca is having a solid but fine game in the middle of the field for Tigres. He makes things look simple as he strokes the ball to the right where Aquino is waiting. Tigres come forward and will ahve a throw on the right.

Paul Rudder
31

Tigres are finally dispossessed and Chivas attempt to go foward but they will settle for a throw in.

Paul Rudder
30

After failing to find fortune on the right, they work the ball to Cordova on the left, but he too fails to find any space.

Paul Rudder
29

Back to Jimenez they go and again Tigres come forward. They seem to be cooking something up.

Paul Rudder
28

The game is heating up now after Quinones' run is brought to an end in suspicious circumstances. It appeared to be a foul, but the ref wasn't having it.

Paul Rudder
27

Aquino once again with the foul, he'll need to watch himself if he intends to stay on the field.

Paul Rudder
26

There's a foul in the middle and once again it's Aquino who is involved and he's already on a yellow.

Paul Rudder
25

Following the throw, the ball is changed to the right, but Chivas lose it and it will be Tigres' turn to have a throw.

Paul Rudder
24

Paul Rudder

Vega to take...but it's in the wall in the end and there is also a foul in the box. Tigres will have the ball.

Paul Rudder
22

Chivas are finding their rhythm now and break through Alvarado, but he's quickly fouled and they will have a free kick from a dangerous area.

Paul Rudder
19

After a very fortunate deflection the ball bounced off the crossbar and falls to Gignac, but he fails to put it home. An unbelievable miss.

as.com
18:30

Gignac gets his first real look at goal and has a shot at it, but fails to generate any power. An easy take for Guzman in Chivas' goal.

Paul Rudder
18

Jimenez has had little to do in goal tonight for Tigres, but his play out of the area has been precise, allowing his team to build attack after attack.

Paul Rudder
16

Their attack is short lived as Tigres regain the ball and once again come forward with composure. They're the better side so far.

Paul Rudder
15

Tigres regain and come forward through Pizarro, it's out left to Cordova, who plays to Cordova and his cross is dangerous, but just deflected by the keeper. Chivas break.

as.com
14

Pizarro brings it forward into the midfield, but his passing which is intended for Cordova goes begging and Chivas will have it again.

Paul Rudder
13

Lainez is played down the right side, but the ball is ushered out by Sepulveda and Chivas will have a goal kick.

Paul Rudder
12

After playing to their keeper Tigres make their way out of defense calmly. Cordova receives on the left side of the box and will have a shot, but it's blocked and Chivas break.

Paul Rudder
11

From the resulting throw, Tigres regain possession and Cordova is off and running. His pass infield, however, is interecepted and Chivas break. They will have a throw.

Paul Rudder
10

Thr throw is wasted and Chivas play out of their defense with some clever touches, which results in Vega being released down the right side, but he's halted and Tigres settle.

9

Paul Rudder
8

Reyes plays infield and the ball is changed to the right, but Cordova's pass is just too long for Lainez to get on the end of it.

Paul Rudder
7

For the moment, Tigres are dominating possession, but they have failed to produce any real threat. They will need to do so if they're going to get a result.

Paul Rudder
6:20

It's poorly taken but possession is returned and Tigres play back to their defense.

Paul Rudder
6

Agulo to take.

Paul Rudder
5

Tigres regain possession. For the moment this is a midfield slog with neither team really making progress, but Cordova has won a corner!

Paul Rudder
4

Tigres are on the attack again and this time it's Quinones who's off on a run, but he's halted and Chivas will bring it out of their defense.

Paul Rudder
3

While attempting to throw the ball into play, it appears Alguno elbowed his opponent, he's been carded for his troubles.

as.com
2:30

Tigress play back to their defense, preferring instead to be patient, but Luis is set in motion down the right side.

Paul Rudder
2

Alexis Vega gets his first touch, but it's a poor one and Tigres regain possession.
