Tigres vs Chivas: who has played the most finals and won the most titles?

Tigres, who played their first final in the 1971/72 season, is one of the most successful clubs in the Liga MX. How do their figures stack up against Chivas’?

While Chivas is widely considered one of the great clubs of Mexican soccer, but since the 1970s, it is their Clausaura 2023 final opponents Tigres who have the better overall record. Tigres have made it to 12 Liga MX finals compared to the eight finals which Chivas have played in, and have been crowned champions seven times with Guadalajara lifting the trophy four times.

These numbers are a simple reference, especially if we go back to the last duel between the two teams. Fate favored the Tapatío team commanded on that occasion by the Argentine Matías Almeyda over a Tigres side led by Brazilian coach Ricardo Ferretti.

Tigres has played in 12 Liga MX finals since the Liguilla system was introduced in 1970/71, winning seven of them. They won their first final, in 1977-78,. beating Pumas 3-1 on aggregate; in the 1981-82 campaign they beat Atlante 3-1; in the Apertura 2011 they beat Santos 4-1; in the Apertura 2015, once again they met Pumas, beating them 4-2 on penalties after an aggregate score of 4-4 after both legs; in the Apertura 2016 they also won the penalty shootout, beating América 3-0; in the Apertura 2017 they beat Monterrey 3-2 and in the Clausura 2019 they beat León 1-0.

On the other side of the coin, the Auriazules have lost five finals: losing the 1979-80 final 4-3 to Cruz Azul; the Winter 2001 final to Pachuca (3-1); the Apertura 2003 to Pachuca (3-2); the Apertura 2014 to América (3-1) and finally, the Clausura 2017 which they lost to Chivas (4-3).

The Jalisco team meanwhile has played a total of eight finals since the 1970s: they won in the 1986-87 season, beating Cruz Azul 4-2 to lift the trophy, in the Summer 1997 campaign they defeated Toros Neza 7-2; beat Toluca 3-2 in the 2006 Apertura and in the Clausura 2017 they over came Tigres (4-3).

Their four final defeats came again Puebla in the 1982-83 season where they crashed out 7-6 on penalties; with América in 1983-84 when they were defeated 5-3, as well as in Winter 1998 with Necaxa 2-0 and in the Clausura 2004. losing 5-4 to Pumas in the shootout.
