Top four Liga MX teams advance to the semi-finals

There are only four teams left in the 2022 Clausura tournament and for the 10th time in history, the top four sides in the standings advanced to the semi-finals. Pachuca (1) will play Club América (4) on 19 May in the first leg at Estadio Azteca and the second leg will be played three days later at Estadio Hidalgo.

The other semi-final will be between Tigres UANL (2) and Atlas (3). The Guadalajara-based team will play at home at Estadio Jalisco on 18 May for the first leg and the second leg will be played three days later at Estadio Universitario.

History of the top four in Liga MX semi-finals

The first time that the top four seeded teams advanced to the semi-finals was in the 1994/95 tournament and on that occasion Necaxa, who had finished second in the regular season, won the title. In the summer of 2000, Toluca finished in first place during the regular campaign and ended up winning the trophy that year.

A year later, Pachuca finished in third place in the standings and won the title. Then in the 2005 Clausura tournament Club América finished in third place and won the trophy. Two years later the four top teams in the standings advanced to the semi-finals and once again Pachuca won the title.

In the 2012 Apertura tournament, Tijuana made history because they finished in second place in the standings and won their first Liga MX title. It was not until the 2016 Clausura campaign that once again the top four teams advanced to the final rounds and Pachuca ended up winning their sixth league title after finishing in second place during the regular season.

In the 2017 Apertura campaign it was Tigres UANL that won the league title, their sixth in franchise history, after finishing in second place during the regular season. History has favored Club Pachuca when the top four seeded teams advanced to the final rounds, Los Tuzos having won it on three occasions.
