Gabriel ‘Toro’ Fernández has become the third most expensive signing in the history of Cruz Azul. The club have reportedly paid $8 million (€7m) to bring in the Montevideo-born player, who in his own words, decided to leave Pumas because of “the history” of his new club. Jonathan ‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez remains the most expensive ever player, having joined from Santos for €11 million.

In second place for the most expensive signings is Orbelín Pineda. After becoming a champion with Chivas in the summer of 2017, he joined La Máquina in December of the following year for €10 million. Other players such as Elías Hernández (€6 million) and Milton Caraglio (€5 million) are also among those who have cost Cruz Azul the most.

Vega on the way

Fernandez’s arrival continues Cruz Azul’s restructuring process after their poor 2023. Martin Anselmi - the club’s technical director - will have new players at his disposal, including Kevin Mier, Gonzálo Piovi, Camilo Cándido and Alexis Vega.
