Tottenham Hotspur fans who travelled to Newcastle last weekend will receive a refund on the price of their matchday ticket after a shocking 6-1 defeat.

On Tuesday Spurs’ players released a statement apologising for the performance and thanking fans for their continued support.

As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger,” the statement began. “It wasn’t good enough. We know word aren’t enough in situations like this but believe use, a defeat like this hurts.

“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park.”

Sunday’s defeat against Champions League rivals Newcastle began with an astonishing 21-minute period in which Spurs conceded five goals. Former Tottenham interim boss Christian Stellini, who was relieved of his duties on Monday, described the opening 25 minutes as the worst that he had ever seen.

Tottenham now have two tough games coming up and will need to get their support back on side if they are to secure European qualification for next season. On Thursday evening they face an in-form Manchester United side, before a trip to Anfield to play Liverpool on Sunday.

The Spurs players’ statement ended with a plea for the fans to support them through the toughest period in the club’s recent history.

It read: “We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us.”

“Together – and only together – can we move things forward.”
