Tottenham have announced the sacking of interim boss Cristian Stellini after Sunday’s 6-1 hammering away to Newcastle in the Premier League.

“Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable. It was devastating to see,” chairman Daniel Levy said via a club statement.

“We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.

“Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well.”

Stellini sacked

Stellini opted for a 4-3-3 formation for the first time this season, which backfired massively as Newcastle scored five times in the opening 21 minutes on a crazy afternoon at St James’ Park.

Antonio Conte’s former number two took full responsibility for his side’s disastrous performance, admitting that changing the shape of his side had not worked.

Under Stellini, Spurs picked up just four points from four matches and fell further away from the all-important fourth spot in the Premier League with Champions League qualification up for grabs for next season.

Spurs after Conte

The north London side started scoring fewer goals, having fewer shots on target, and completing fewer successful passes per match than under former boss Conte.

The club’s points tally was 1.8 per game with Conte in charge and dropped to 1 since Stellini took over.

Mason comes in

Former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason will replace Stellini with immediate effect and a further update on his staff will follow.
