Tragedy as Monterrey fan dies after being run over post Santos Laguna game
Mexican football once again has been tainted with tragedy after a truck collided into seven Rayados after the matchday two Liga MX Clausura game between Santos and Rayados.
The second matchday of the 2024 Clausura has been marred by tragedy after it was confirmed that one Monterrey fan has lost her life after the game between Santos and Monterrey. A pick-up truck crashed into a group of visiting supporters in Torreón after the game at the Estadio Corona. The driver of the truck has been detained by local police.
The first reports state that at 11:30 p.m. (local time) seven Monterrey fans were run over on the Torreón-San Pedro highway by a pickup truck with Texas license plates. Six people were injured with a 50-year-old woman losing her life with the the truck was going in the opposite direction when it first hit a yellow taxi and subsequently another vehicle.

In the early hours of this Monday, 22 January, Liga MX announced that the alleged perpetrators have been detained and issued the following statement.
“Tonight state authorities in the city of Torreón reported to us an tragic event that occurred on public roads around the TSM complex. The Santos board has been in direct communication with the state authorities, as well as with the Rayados board and with the Liga MX, to make available all its resources and information collected that helps clarify the facts”
“For now, the alleged perpetrators have been arrested and placed at the disposal of local authorities, whom we trust to promptly follow up on the investigation.”
”Both at Liga MX, as well as in Club Santos and Club Monterrey, we extend our condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as our support and solidarity to the other victims. “We will continue to pay attention to the development of this unfortunate situation.”
