Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to be sidelined for several weeks after the Liverpool player suffered a knee ligament tear in the club’s FA Cup win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The injury setback gives Jurgen Klopp another headache in defence, with Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas already out through injury.

Lijnders provides update on Alexander-Arnold

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Fulham at Anfield, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders said: “First of all, some not-that-good news, Trent hyper-extended his knee during the last game.

“So he has a little tear in the lateral ligament of his knee and he will need time to recover. He had a scan and he will be out for a few weeks, so let’s see after that.

“He will get some rest and then hopefully he can come back to where he was. Because this guy was decisive in all the games and was the one who created constantly for us from deep and gave the team a high level of flexibility. We will really miss him.”

Investing in squad

Northern Irish defender Conor Bradley, 20, could be called up for more first-team action as well as Luke Chambers and Owen Beck, who are both now also in contention for a role in the side.

Lijnders added: “We spent a lot of money in the summer. We really invested in the squad, the ownership really brought in the right players.

“Conor and Bobby (Clark) are not back-up players, they are part of our squad. They are young, hungry and made for games like this.

“Young players just need the opportunity. They don’t need criticism, they just need trust from the coaching staff.”
