Trinidad and Tobago - USMNT summary: score, goals and highlights | CONCACAF Nations League

Update:
Robinson gives USMNT the lead with stooping header

Trinidad and Tobago - USMNT: As it happened

The United States have made it through to the 2024 Copa America after squeezing past Trinidad and Tobago on Monday evening.

After last week's 3-0 first leg victory, USMNT were the hot favourites to progress comfortably but they were made to work for it against a resolute Trinidad and Tobago side. The visitors took the lead through a well-taken Antonee Robinson header in the first half and looked to be cruising, until Sergino Dest was dismissed for two bookings in the space of ten seconds.

With the visitors down to ten men Trinidad and Tobago found fresh impetus and levelled the score within minutes of Dest's departure. Reon Moore finished coolly for the hosts.

The second half began with more good play from the home side and Alvin Jones nudged them ahead with booming free kick early in the second half. It looked like an incredible comeback might be on but Gregg Berhalter's side had enough experience to see out the game and book their place in the 2024 Copa America.

A disappointing defeat for USMNT on the night, but they achieve their goal for the November international break.

USMNT progress in Nations League despite loss

It was neither the result or the performance that Gregg Berhalter would have hoped for, but USMNT did enough to make it through to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Nations League. The game turned on an idiotic first half dismissal for Sergino Dest, which the hosts duly capitalised on.

William Gittins
90+3

Peeep peeeeep peeeeeeeep

That's that! USMNT make it through to the 2024 Copa America despite an unconvincing performance that ends in defeat against Trinidad and Tobago.

William Gittins
90+2

Trinidad and Tobago probably have time for one more foray forward and bring the ball forward with Gomez. Can they must one last chance?

William Gittins
90+1

The US finally take the corner kick short and Tillman embarks on a mazy run into the T&T penalty box. He makes it to the corner of the six-yard box before trying to pull the ball back to a teammates, but the hosts intercept.

William Gittins
90

There will be a minimum of three minutes of added time at the end of the second half.

William Gittins
90

USMNT win a corner kick as we approach the end of the regulation 90 minutes.

William Gittins
89

First signs of desperation from the hosts as Alvin Jones takes aim from 40 yards out, looking to catch Turner off-guard.

He may have scored an impressive free kick earlier this evening, but Jones' latest effort is easily saved.

William Gittins
88

Brilliant run from Brenden Aaronson to skip through the hosts' challenge and make it to the edge of the T&T box. He shoots from 20 yards but his effort is blocked by a recovering defender and cleared.

William Gittins
87

Nearly another opportunity for Trinidad and Tobago as Telfer looks to latch onto a long ball. Once again he is adjudged to be over-physical in his challenge as USMNT win the free kick.

William Gittins
85

There's a long ball forward towards to Shaw but the Trinidad and Tobago striker can't bring it down, giving away a free kick in the process.

William Gittins
83

For all that they have improved in the second half, the hosts have struggled to generate many chances. They have had decent possession on the halfway line but there hasn't been much ability to break down the US defensive structure.

William Gittins
82

We're into the final ten minutes of normal time and the hosts really not to make a movement now if they are to get back into this game.

T&T win a throw-in high on the left wing.

William Gittins
81

The visitors win a throw-in near the corner flag, a chance for them to keep the ball in the T&T half for a spell.

William Gittins
79

USMNT have done a good job of slowing the pace of the game in the past ten minutes, preventing the hosts from building up a head of steam in the final stages.

William Gittins
78

Joe Scally

The US substitute is booked for a cynical foul on the halfway line, dragging down Muckette to break up a potential counter-attack.

William Gittins
77

Good play from Balogun to win a free kick in the T&T half. He has had little to work with since the US went down to ten men but's he's worked admirably for the team.

William Gittins
76

With 15 minutes remaining Trinidad and Tobago are running out of time to mount an unlikely comeback. They need three unanswered goals to progress past the United States.

William Gittins
71

The US are are playing a 4-4-1 formation now, with Tillman and Aaronson playing as wide midfielders and Balogun as the lone striker. Musah and De La Torre are being made to do a lot of work in the middle of the pitch.

William Gittins
69

Brilliant play from Tillman on the left flank to bring the ball down under pressure and win a free kick for his team. His quality could really help the US see this game out.

William Gittins
68

Moore has a chance to bring Trinidad and Tobago forward again, but the rangy forward slips at a crucial moment. The chance goes begging.

William Gittins
67

The hosts are looking a lot more proactive in their off-the-ball play and are starting to press the US in their own half. There's good work to press Scally on the halfway line and T&T are back on the ball.

William Gittins
CONCACAF Nations League: what happens if there’s a tie in the quarter-finals?

It wasn't a question that seems particularly when the US took a 4-0 aggregate lead, But 45 minutes later that might have changed.

There's still an incredibly long road back from Trinidad and Tobago to complete a comeback against USMNT, but here's what it would take for Gregg Berhalter's side to be eliminated...

Substitution for the United States as Tillman comes on to replace Pepi

A pragmatic change from Berhalter.

William Gittins
62

There's areal confidence in Trinidad and Tobago's play now, stroking the ball around in the midfield and taking advantage of the extra man.

USMNT are struggling to keep the ball, Berhalter is preparing a change.

William Gittins
61

The hosts are continuing to push forward and are finding gaps between the USMNT defence.

Gomez makes good progress down the right flank and hits a right-footed shot from an angle. His effort flies over the crossbar.

William Gittins
59

Chance! T&T

Big chance for James, and it was so easy!

The US had a corner kick but the hosts recovered well and mount a quick counter-attack. A simple ball over the top finds James one-on-one with Turner but he drags the shot wide.

William Gittins
58

Wow! What now?

USMNT are not only struggling with the one-man disadvantage, they also look a little shell-chocked as to how this game has turned since Dest's dismissal.

Berhalter's team need to get back in control.

William Gittins
57

Goooooaaaaaaaal! Trinidad and Tobago

Sensational scenes as Alvin Jones spanks a 30-yard free kick into the top corner!

Well, I did say that it was coming. The T&T forward scores against USMNT again, game on!

William Gittins
55

Poor touch from Pepi on the halfway line and T&T come forward again. The hosts have really dominated the play in the opening ten minutes of the second half.

Can they find another goal?

William Gittins
54

Chance! Trinidad and Tobago

Phillips does well for the hosts, skipping inside to make some room for a long-range shot. For a moment Turner looks concerned, but the shot is dragged wide of the target.

William Gittins
53

The corner is cleared but worked back to Jones, the taker, on the left. He has another go at the delivery but this one goes straight into the arms of Turner.

William Gittins
52

James takes the free kick and it clips the US wall, going out for a corner for the hosts.

Another chance to deliver with quality.

William Gittins
51

De La Torre is penalised for a clumsy challenge on the edge of the USMNT box, giving T&T a chance to strike on goal from 25 yards.

There are plenty of candidates to take it and Turner is frantically organising his wall...

William Gittins
49

T&T are having much more joy in the opening stages of the second half, taking advantage of the extra space between the USMNT lines.

However the US' strike means that they now have an away goal. The hosts will need to find four goals in the second half to progress.

William Gittins
47

Promising start from Trinidad and Tobago at the start of the second half, working the ball down the flanks well.

James picks up the ball on the right and lets fly from range but his effort balloons over the crossbar.

William Gittins
45

And we're back!

The hosts get us underway in the second half...

William Gittins

USMNT take the lead with Antonee Robinson header

After that late flourish from the hosts, it is easy to forget that USMNT were the dominate force for the vast majority of the first half. Greg Berhalter's team found a breakthrough through left back Antonee Robinson, who stooped low to nod the ball home from the penalty spot.

The Fulham man continues his fine goal-scoring form for his country!

William Gittins

Why was Sergino Dest sent off?

There have been chances, and goals, for both sides in the first half, but the key moment remains the idiotic dismissal of Sergino Dest.

The USMNT defender was booked for kicking the ball away after marginal decision went against him. Just moments later he received a second yellow card for continuing to protest the decision.

Gregg Berhalter's team are down to 10 men and Trinidad and Tobago are sensing an unlikely comeback now.

William Gittins
45+4

Half time in Trinidad!

USMNT are still in the driving seat but the first half finished with a flurry for the host after Sergino Dest was dismissed. Can they must something special in the second half?

William Gittins
45+3

Pepi does well for USMNT, holding the ball up on the halfway line to help them force their way up the pitch.

William Gittins
45+2

US are just looking to make it to the break now and Turner has started to play long from goal kicks. The visitors need to show a bit of experience in the remaining moments.

William Gittins
45

There will be a minimum of four minutes of added time at the end of the first hal.

William Gittins
44

Chance! T&T

Nearly another opening for the visitors as the ball is slid through to James on the right of the box. He latches onto the through ball but it gets stuck under his feet at the vital moment.

Goal kick USMNT.

William Gittins
44

USMNT are looking to cool things down as we approach half time, but that goal has absolutely changed the task at hand for the US.

William Gittins

Moore gets hosts back into the game

William Gittins
43

Gooooooooaaal! Moore

Trinidad are back in the game and Moore gives them the equaliser on the night. It was a brilliant finish from a tight angle to rifle the ball past Turner.

Game on!

William Gittins
41

So USMNT are down to ten men now, after Dest was dismissed for a brainless double booking while the US were cruising. It looks like Berhalter will make a change now.

William Gittins
40

Sergino Dest

Incredible! He simply refused to give up his protestations, even after being pulled away by his teammates, and lands himself with a second yellow card.

Incredible stupid with the US in such a commanding position in this tie.

William Gittins
38

Sergino Dest

The USMNT full back is booked for a lack of discipline near the touchline. He is booked for challenging the referees decision on a fairly inconsequential throw-in decision.

Unnecessary.

William Gittins
36

Chance! USMNT

There's an opening for Reyna as the Dortmund man makes a clever run in behind the T&T backline. He's on a tight angle and a recovering defenders manages to get back and prevent a clear shot on goal.

He lets flies but it goes well over the crossbar. Goal kick.

William Gittins
36

Good play from Robinson to keep the ball under pressure from two T&T forwards. He gets clipped by one of the challenges but referee says no free kick.

William Gittins
35

Chance! USMNT

Aaronson picks up the ball on the edge of the T&T box, around 25 yards from goal, and shoots from range. The ball clips Balogun on the penalty box and, for a second, it looks like it might fall kindly for the US striker.

But he can't quite make a clean connection and his toe-poked effort dribbles wide of the target.

William Gittins
33

Musah is penalised for a foul on the halfway line, giving the the hosts a free kick. They look to clip the ball forward but Musah is back defending and coolly nods the ball back to Turner.

William Gittins
30

The ball goes wide to Raymond but the T&T left back can't find the right cross and USMNT get it clear.

William Gittins
29

Reyna curls in a corner kick from the left, forcing a strong punch from Smith.

T&T look to catch the US on the break and are mounting a counter-attack...

William Gittins
28

USMNT have the lead and it was absolutely coming. The performance has been more confident than last week's first leg and the visitors deserve their lead as we approach the half hour-mark.

William Gittins
25

Gooooooaaaal! USMNT

They have the lead through Antonee Robinson!

The Fulham man does brilliantly to dart in at the back post and connect with a diving header and nod home. Brilliant spell of play from USMNT there!

William Gittins
24

More considered possession from USMNT now, doing well to work the ball up to Pepi

The PSV forward has shown some good touches in the opening stages here.

William Gittins
22

Reyna opts to pass and tries to slide the ball through to Balogun. The Monaco forward turns on the ball but is muscled out of it by the T&T defence.

The hosts win a free kick in their own box and are able to relaase the pressure.

William Gittins
20

USMNT win another free kick, this time on the edge of the box, around 30 yards from goal.

It looks like it will be Reyna to take it - will he shoot or cross? He's a long way from goal.

William Gittins
19

There's a heavy challenge from Jones on Aaronson on the touchline. The Union Berlin loanee goes down but is fit to continue.

William Gittins
16

The ball loops over the box and out towards De La Torre on the left flank. He whips in a cross but Smith easily collects.

William Gittins
15

USMNT pitch the ball from the T&T backline and are straight on the offensive. There's some last-gasp defending from the hosts to clear the immediate danger but the US win a corner.

Reyna to take...

William Gittins
14

The hosts are starting to enjoy more of the ball, finally getting a foot in the game.

William Gittins
12

Chance! T&T

First opening for the hosts falls to James, as he cuts inside from the right and fires at goal. It takes a deflection on the way through and Turner can claim the ball as it loops into the air.

William Gittins
10

There's another USMNT free kick, this time on the right. They play short this time and continue a spell of sustained possession in the T&T half.

William Gittins
8

It's been a commanding start for USMNT, looking to find an early breakthrough against the team that frustrated them for so long last week.

Musah does well to turn on the ball and work is out to Balogun on the left flank. USMNT building the play now.

William Gittins
7

Good chance for USMNT to deliver with a free kick from the left. Reyna floats the ball in but T&T get it cleared for a throw in.

William Gittins
6

US keeper Matt Turner gets the ball first and punches clear of the box. Good goalkeeping from the Nottingham Forest man.

William Gittins
5

Trinidad and Tobago look to be playing with a defensive block of seven players, trying to frustrate USMNT in central areas.

The hosts manage to get the ball up the pitch and win a corner as Carter-Vickers deflects a cross wide.

William Gittins
3

Close! USMNT

There's an opening for Folarin Balogun as he picks up the ball just inside the box. He takes aim but Smith makes a flying save to his right.

William Gittins
2

Close! USMNT

Brilliant play from Musah to charge through the midfield and feed the ball to Brenden Aaronson on the edge of the Trinidad box. The youngster shifts the ball onto his right and lets fly, but it's easily saved.

William Gittins
1

It's a comfortable start for USMNT in the early stages, passing the ball around the defence.

Key players absent for Gregg Berhalter

USMNT are without a number of key players tonight, two of whom have played key roles under Gregg Berhalter.
