Trophy-laden Liga MX coach emulates legend of Mexican soccer
After Toluca’s Campeón de Campeones win over América, Los Diablos Rojos’ boss has drawn level with one of Mexico’s all-time great coaches.
Toluca has once again toppled Club América, this time to claim the Campeón de Campeones title and solidify its status as the top team in Mexican soccer right now.
With this latest triumph, Toluca head coach Antonio “Turco” Mohamed has etched his name into the history books, having now defeated América in three separate finals - tying the legendary Raúl Cárdenas for the most titles won against Las Águilas.
Mohamed, who once coached América to a championship himself, continues to haunt his former club. His latest victory not only adds another trophy to Toluca’s cabinet but also places him in elite company among Mexico’s most decorated coaches.
Raúl reign: Cárdenas vs América
Cárdenas, a cornerstone of Cruz Azul’s golden era, was a nightmare for América in the 1970s. His teams bested the Eagles in three major finals:
- 1971-72 season: Cruz Azul 4-1 América
- Campeón de Campeones 1973-74: Cruz Azul 2-1 América
- Copa México 1975-76: Tigres 3-2 América

Mohamed’s mastery over América
Now, Mohamed is writing his own golden chapter with Toluca. His teams have defeated André Jardine’s América in back-to-back finals, despite Los Azulcremas being hailed as one of the most dominant rosters in recent Mexican soccer history. Here are the titles Mohamed has taken from América:
- Apertura 2019: América (2) 3-3 (4) Monterrey
- Clausura 2025: Toluca 2-0 América
- Campeón de Campeones 2025: América 1-3 Toluca
With this latest win, Mohamed not only strengthens his legacy but also reopens the debate about who truly stands among the greatest coaches in Liga MX history.
