Real Madrid

Two down, five to go as Real Madrid chase historic title septuple

‘Los Blancos’ added the Intercontinental Cup to their UEFA Super Cup titles and now have sights set on the Spanish Super Cup.

In the previous incarnation of the football calendar, only two clubs ever managed to claim every available title in any given season with Pep Guardiola’s FC Barcelona first achieving the feat back in 2009 winning LaLiga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup along with the Champions League, European Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup before FC Bayern Munich repeated the sweep in 2020.

As recently as 2023, Manchester City went close scooping five titles but falling short with a FA Community Shield loss to Arsenal.

With FIFA introducing the new expanded 32 team Club World Cup next summer, seven major titles are now on offer for major European sides and as things stand, for the 2024/25 season, Real Madrid are the only club capable of dreaming about making history in bagging all seven.

Two titles in the bag

Real Madrid’s journey to seventh heaven started in Warsaw last August as they brushed Serie A’s Atalanta aside in the UEFA Super Cup with new signing Kylian Mbappé making his debut and bagging the second goal as part of a 2-0 win the over Bergamo based outfit.

Title number two fell in Doha as Liga MX outfit CF Pachuca were outclassed by the Santiago Bernabeu side as part of a 3-0 win with coach Ancelotti bagging his 15th title on the Madrid bench.

Next up, Spanish Super Cup

The next destination for ‘Los Blancos’ in their title quest is Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) in early January with Madrid set to face Real Mallorca in the semi-final of the ‘Final Four’ format with Athletic and Barça meeting in the other game.

Copa del Rey

Real Madrid face CD Minera in the third round of the 2024-25 Copa del Rey and in recent years, the Spanish Cup has provided to be something of an ‘achilles heel’ for the Bernabeu side with recent high profile humiliating defeats at the hands of lowly Alcoyano, Alcorcon, Real Union still tormenting ‘Madridistas’.

The final for the 2024/25 knock-out competition will be, once again staged in Seville at the Olympic Stadium (La Cartuja) with the game earmarked for 26 April, 2025.

LaLiga 24/25

Carlo Ancelotti’s men are currently in third place in the domestic competition and with Barcelona starting to stutter, the race to the title this season does look like being a three-horse-race between Los Blancos, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid with Diego Simeone’s side arguably boasting the strongest squad in LaLiga.

Munich Champions League final

The introduction of the new 36 team league ‘Swiss Model’ Champions League initial stage format has divided opinion. Qualified teams now play eight games in the opening phase before the competition reverts to the Round of 16 and traditional run-in.

Real Madrid have looked rusty this season in European competition and with two games to go in the opening stage, it would take a series of freak results for Ancelotti’s men to secure a top eight berth and Madrid will probably have to settle for a play-off round.

Defeats to Lille, Milan and Liverpool have shown a vulnerability to the Bernabeu outfit, but despite these setbacks, we’ve all seen this film before and few would bet against ‘Los Blancos’ heading onto the pitch in the Munich final next May.

Club World Cup

The 2025 Club World Cup, the pipe-dream of FIFA chief Gianni Infantino is fast becoming a reality.

After the new expanded tournament failed to pick up momentum initially, the competition has quickly put all the vital elements into place with stadiums across the USA locked in, the 32 teams now know their opponents and broadcaster DAZN stepped in at the eleventh hour as a media partner to ensure the desired global audience can be reached.

The group stage draw was conducted earlier this month and Real Madrid have been handed a reasonably uncomplicated task where they will be expected to see off rivals, RB Salzburg, CF Pachuca and Al Hilal.

Could Giant’s Stadium next July the venue where Madrid are crowned with their seventh title for the 24-25 season?
