Update:

UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, is moving toward a vote to suspend its member federation, Israel, over the ongoing situation in Gaza with the United Nations alleging that genocide is being committed by the Israeli authorities.

A majority of UEFA’s 20-member executive committee is expected to back any vote at the emergency meeting to suspend Israeli teams from international matches, two sources told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

The decision comes two weeks before the Israeli men’s team resumes its 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with away matches against Norway and Italy with the potential ban also impacting on the sole Israeli club sides playing in the UEFA Europa League (Maccabi Tel Aviv) .

A suspension of the Israeli FA by Uefa would increase the pressure on FIFA to follow suit, but football’s world governing body is in a difficult position because of the close relationship between its president, Gianni Infantino, and Donald Trump with the 2026 World Cup looming on the horizon, with the 48 team competition set to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States.
