UEFA name match officials ahead of four major European finals

Following the conclusion of last week’s semi-final games, we know the names of the sides who will participate in the four forthcoming UEFA showpiece final games.

The governing body confirmed the names of the refereeing teams for the three men’s finals: Champions League, Europa League and Conference League as well as the team of officials who will be in charge for the FC Barcelona-Wolfsburg Women’s Champions League final in Eindhoven.

2022/23 UEFA Champions League final:

Atatürk Stadium: 10 June: Manchester City-Inter

Polish match official Szymon Marciniak has been assigned referee the Champions League final between Manchester City and Internazionale, which takes place at Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.

The 42-year-old Polish national will oversee his first ever Champions League final, after acting as fourth official in the 2018 final. He has refereed eight UEFA Champions League matches this season as of the play-off round, and was in charge for the recent semi-final second leg between Manchester City and Real Madrid which saw the Premier League side romp to a 4-0 win. Last December, the Plock native took centre stage as he refereed the 2022 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and France in Lusail (Qatar).

2022/23 UEFA Europa League final:

Puskás Arena (Budapest): 31 May: Sevilla-Roma

The 67,000 capacity stadium in the Hungarian capital hosts this year’s Europa League final as Sevilla look for a record seventh UEL title as they face Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.

Manchester born Anthony Taylor will referee the Europa League final in Budapest on Wednesday 31 May.

The 44-year-old English referee has taken charge of six UEFA Champions League matches and one UEFA Europa League match this season, including the semi-final first leg between Roma and Feyenoord. Taylor refereed the 2020 UEFA Super Cup which took place in the same stadium in Budapest between Bayern Munich and Sevilla, as well as the 2021 UEFA Nations League final between Spain and France.

2022/23 UEFA Conference League final:

Eden Arena (Prague): 7 June: West Ham-Fiorentina

With a semi-final win over AZ Alkmaar, West Ham United advanced to their first European final in 47 years as they face Serie A’s Fiorentina in Prague who beat Swiss side Basel.

Spaniard Carlos del Cerro Grande has been selected by UEFA to oversee the Conference League final in the Czech capital on Wednesday 7 June with a 3pm (ET) kick-off.

Del Cerro Grande has been an international referee since 2013, and will be taking charge of his first UEFA club competition final. This season, the 47-year-old has officiated five Champions League matches and one UEFA Europa Conference League match, including the Champions League quarter-final second leg between Inter and Benfica.

2022/23 UEFA Women’s Champions League final:

Philips Stadium (Eindhoven): 3 June: Wolfsburg-Barcelona

A sold out stadium is a fitting conclusion of the 2022/23 Women’s Champions League final as the German side look to add to their two titles with Barça keen to ad to their sole 2021 triumph.

Bangor (Wales) native Cheryl Foster will referee the Women’s Champions League on Saturday 3 June.

An international referee since 2015, the 42-year-old will oversee her first Women’s Champions League final. This season, she has refereed three Women’s Champions League matches, including the quarter-final second leg between Wolfsburg and PSG. She also officiated three matches at last year’s Women’s EURO 2022 in England.
