PIQUE

Union Berlin hit back at Piqué's TikTok remark: “We’ll get the beer and sausages in”

Speaking to the UK Times, the former FC Barcelona player stated that games he felt were too long and that he prefers to watch football on the sofa instead of in a stadium.

Gerard Piqué's thoughts on the modern game certainly hit a nerve with many football fans after the former Barcelona fan claimed (in an interview with The Times) that he prefered to “sit in his pajamas and watch football on television” over going to the stadium. He also claimed that the modern game is losing its appeal to the younger demographic as it battles against the likes of TikTok and Netflix for attention and that his children’s interaction with the sport was one of the inspirations behind creating the Kings League.

Bundesliga side Union Berlin were swift to reply to the former FC Barcelona defender with the German side well known for its legion of loyal fans that fill the Stadion An der Alten Foersterei week-in, week-out creating a raucous atmosphere.

“Let’s see if Gerard Piqué can visit us at An der Alten Försterei and change his opinion that people prefer to watch the game on the couch in their pajamas rather than at the stadium”, was the ironic message from the Berlin side on the Spanish language version of their X/Twitter account.

The club further incentivised the offer to the former player with a cheeky: “The beer and the sausage are on us.”
