Uruguay against Ghana? Yes, please!

In what must be one the strangest of rivalries in football - while simultaneously be one of the most intriguing - is upon us. Twelve years later, over a decade after that moment from that man happened in that semi-final, the Black Stars have the opportunity to lay their Uruguayan ghosts to rest on the World stage.

Ghana sit in the driving seat in terms of the match up, currently second in the group with 3 points while Uruguay have just 1. Diego Alonso will need to not only win but hope that Portugal beat South Korea and nothing else will do. History is on their side, as they have, ahem, never lost to an African nation at a World Cup - why might that be?

"I didn't miss the penalty," said Luis Suárez in the pre-match press conference. Cheeky boy.

Team news

In terms of available players, Diego Alonso has pretty much a full squad to choose from, apart from FC Barcelona defender, Ronald Araújo, who is still recovering from injury.

The question then, comes in the form of who he will select for the must-win clash. It remains to be seen if veterans Suárez and Cavani will start after looking sluggish in the past two matches for La Celeste. Mario Gómez made a positive impact in the last game and might have played himself onto Alonso’s team sheet.

As for the midfield, it writes itself to a certain extent with Fede Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur practically undroppable; Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Matías Vecino will have to fight it out inside Alosno’s head for a starting spot.
