The third matchday of the Champions League brings a golden opportunity for Weston McKennie, as Juventus travel to the Santiago Bernabéu for a make-or-break encounter against Real Madrid – one that could help define the season for both club and player.

The Bianconeri head to Madrid this Wednesday knowing that anything short of victory could seriously damage their chances of advancing to the knockout stage, having collected just two points from their first two group games.

For McKennie, though, the night carries a more personal significance. Once seen as a fixture in Juve’s starting lineup, the American midfielder has found himself playing a smaller role this campaign. Wednesday’s clash offers him a platform to remind everyone of his value – and perhaps rediscover the confidence that once made him a reliable piece of the Italian side’s midfield.

So far this season, McKennie has featured in 12 matches, logging just 588 minutes and contributing neither goals nor assists. His lack of end product has reflected the dip in form that has marked his campaign. A strong showing against Real Madrid could be the spark he needs to reignite his game.

McKennie aims to join a select USMNT club at the Bernabéu

Earlier this Champions League season, Tim Weah, McKennie’s former Juventus teammate, made headlines when he scored for Marseille against Real Madrid in the tournament’s opening round. With that goal, Weah became only the second American to ever score against Los Blancos in the Champions League, joining Christian Pulisic, who achieved the feat with Chelsea.

Now, McKennie hopes to add his name to that short list – whether through a goal or an assist – if he sees playing time on Wednesday night at the Bernabéu.

Big-game pedigree in Europe

Throughout his European career, McKennie has delivered standout performances against some of the continent’s elite clubs. Against Serie A rivals Inter and AC Milan, he has tallied two goals and two assists combined. He’s also found the net once in five meetings with Manchester City.

The 26-year-old already has a bit of history with Real Madrid, having faced them during a past Club World Cup, where Juventus narrowly lost 1–0. Wednesday’s clash, then, offers the American midfielder a chance at redemption – and a moment to reignite his Juventus story.
