The United States reached the final four of the Gold Cup for an 11th consecutive tournament after defeating Canada on penalties in the quarter-finals.
The semi-final tie pits USMNT against Panama, one of the standout teams in this year’s competition. In their quarter-final Los Canaleros thrashed Qatar 4-0, with Ismael Diaz recording the fastest hat-trick in Gold Cup history.
Speaking after the win over Canada, USMNT head coach BJ Callaghan said that he had been impressed with his side’s performance in a tense game:
“We know when you get into knock-out soccer matches - high intensity, high stakes - you have to be performing at your best. But at the same time you’ve gotta expect the unexpected.”
“We had good responses to moments of uncertainty and I thought the team had good character throughout,” he said, when asked about his side’s performance in the quarter-final.
