One of the most soccer mad states in the country is Veracruz, which the last major team in the region being the Tiburones Rojos with the club forced out of business in 2019 due to economic issues. A project is now afoot to establish a new team which will play at the Luis ‘Pirata’ Fuente Stadium which is set to go under a remodeling process which will include erasing all traces and branding of the ‘Sharks’.

The government of the State of Veracruz announced the project, which includes a partial demolition of the stadium with five percent of the planned work having already been carried out with all Tiburones Rojos emblems and logos set to disappear.

2019 Liga MX expulsion

After reports of players not receiving payment in 2019 and following an in-game protest against Tigres UANL in the 2019 Apertura discontent with owner Fidel Kurri grew to a point where the FMF officially disqualified Veracruz from Liga MX following the 2019 Apertura.

Their players became free agents, free to sign with any club, and their women’s team was also ejected from Liga MX Femenil with all other branches of the club, including its academies and reserves, dissolved as well.

It is hoped in the forthcoming years, that Veracruz will host a new Mexican soccer team which could bear the name of the state with legal issues with former owner Kuri mean no links with Tiburones can be used. According to TUDN, local businessmen and soccer authorities are keen for high profile professional soccer returning to the state and the historic stadium.
