The Week 15 Liga MX clash between Rayados and Santos Laguna left one player in the wars - Luis Cárdenas, who had to quit the game at the interval after being involved in a collision with another player.

At the end of the game, Monterrey coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich confirmed that the goalkeeper had suffered a broken nose. For El Mochis, Rayados’s second-choice keeper, Sunday’s game was his first appearance in the Clausura 2023. He was brought in to cover for the suspended Esteban Andrada.

On 27 minutes, Santos Laguna midfielder Diego Medina clipped the the keeper with his foot, then followed through with his knee, causing cuts to Cárdenas’ mouth and the side of his face. The Liga MX concussion protocol was immediately activated and the game was stopped for around eight minutes while the Monterrey keeper received treatment.

Hernández debut

Cárdenas was able to continue in the Albiazul goal for the remaining minutes of the first half but a decision was made at half-time to replace him with B team keeper Fernando Hernández who came on to make his debut.

“We will have to evaluate the injury carefully,” Vucetich told reporters in his post-match press conference. “I’ve watched the video, and VAR should intervene in cases like this. The player (Cárdenas) has a fracture. These incidents need to be looked at and evaluated accordingly”.
