Weir becomes Real Madrid’s new No. 10: who’ll inherit Scot’s 11 shirt?

After excelling in her first season at Real Madrid, Weir is the new incumbent of the No. 10 shirt, which was left vacant by Esther González’s exit from the club.

Esther González’s summer departure from Real Madrid left Las Blancas’ No. 10 shirt free - but only briefly. The number, which has been worn by some of the greatest stars in soccer history, has been snapped up by Caroline Weir.

Weir takes on legendary number after fine first year at Real Madrid

For the moment, Weir is the only Madrid player who has switched numbers ahead of the 2023/24 season. The Scot, who has excelled since joining the club last July, sported the No. 11 in an enormously successful maiden campaign in the Spanish capital.

Given freedom to roam by Madrid head coach Alberto Toril, the hugely talented forward established herself as one of the stand-out stars in the Liga F, scoring 19 goals and supplying 12 assists in Spain’s top flight.

Weir targets Esther’s Madrid tally

In her second campaign at Madrid, Weir has a landmark achievement in her sights: she can become the club’s highest ever goalscorer. The 28-year-old is closing in on the feat. Having netted 28 times in all competitions last term, she is only 11 short of González’s club-record haul.

No change for now for likes of Linda and Athenea

Although Weir’s number swap leaves No. 11 free at Madrid, nobody in the squad has yet taken the shirt. Linda Caicedo and Athenea del Castillo would be two clear candidates to inherit the jersey, but as things stand they will continue to wear No. 19 and No. 22, respectively. In addition to 11, the other free numbers in Madrid’s first-team group are 12, 13, 15, 17 and 25.
