West Ham agree Harry Maguire transfer: England defender set to leave Manchester United

The 30-year-old made just 16 Premier League appearances last season as he slipped down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag.

Former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire will join West Ham United this summer after the club agreed a deal to bring him from Old Trafford.

The Athletic reports that West Ham have had a bid worth £30 million accepted for the defender as David Moyes looks to reinforce the squad following the departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105 million.

Maguire, who joined United in 2019, had been club captain under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but fell out of favour under Erik ten Hag last season.

Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane were preferred as the starting defensive pairing, while the likes of Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw also moved ahead of Maguire in the pecking order.

Maguire will hope that the move to West Ham will enable him to return to regular action. With the European Championships less than a year away England manager Gareth Southgate will be eager to see one of his most trusted lieutenants find more first team opportunities.

Manchester United sales: McTominay, Fred and Van de Beek

Manchester United have already addressed a number of key issues this summer. Mason Mount has arrived from Chelsea to add more dynamism to the midfield. Ten Hag secured the signing of Andres Onana, who will be the ball-playing goalkeeper that the Dutchman’s expansive style of play requires.

Most recently Rasmus Hojlund arrived on a £72 million deal from Atalanta to play as the focal point to United’s attack. Now, however, the club need to focus on shifting some unwanted players.

Along with Maguire, West Ham have also shown an interest in Scott McTominay. They have submitted an offer of £30 million for the midfielder but United are thought to value him at closer to £40 million.

United are also open to selling Brazilian midfielder Fred, who is thought to have interest from the Saudi Pro League. The player would prefer to stay in Europe, with Galatasaray having previous signalled an interest.

The final potential departure from United’s bloated midfield is former Ajax man Donny Van de Beek. The Dutchman rose to prominence during Ten Hag’s spell at Ajax but has failed to recapture his best form in England.

Van de Beek has attracted interest from LaLiga side Real Sociedad, who are looking for an attacking midfielder to replace the now-retired David Silva.

If United can complete these deals in the coming weeks, it may allow them to return to Sofyan Amrabat, the Fiorentina midfielder who starred for Morocco in the 2022 World Cup.
