Weston McKennie stars for Juventus amid transfer talk

Weston McKennie has never been the most prolific scorer but he has struck a rich vein of form in the Champions League this season.

The USMNT midfielder found the back of the net for Juventus in a 2-0 win over Benfica on Wednesday. McKennie’s strike was his third consecutive goal in Champions League games, making him Juve’s joint-top scorer in this year’s competition.

The 27-year-old previously scored against Pafos and Bodo/Glimt, and he has notched a further two goals in Serie A this season. In recent months the American has grown in importance for Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti, making himself a fixture in the team.

Despite his good performances, McKennie finds himself out of contract at the end of the 2025/26 season and he will likely have options from around Europe.

Last weekend GiveMeSport reported that McKennie had received interest from Spanish giants Atlético Madrid, with teams in Italy and England also keeping tabs on him. Given that he will be a free agent within a matter of months, McKennie may be available on a cut-price deal this January.

Whatever his contract situation, McKennie will be desperate to ensure that he finishes the season on good form to secure a starting berth in the US team for this summer’s World Cup. He has been a regular feature of the USMNT midfield under Mauricio Pochettino and his recent run of goal-scoring performances will be doing his World Cup prospects no harm.
