What changes are being planned in the Expansion League? Will promotion/relegation return?
Some of the proposed variations include increasing the number of teams to 24 and imposing a limit on foreign players.
The promotion and relegation of clubs is one of the topics that is usually put on the table when talking about what is necessary to change the landscape of Mexican soccer.
After promotion and relegation in the Liga MX was abolished in 2020, fans have constantly asked the leaders of national football for this basic element of almost all the professional leagues in the world to return to the Mexican tournament. Their voices may finally have been heard. The possibility of the system of teams being promoted/relegated returning is already being considered - but as part of a complete facelift.
According to information from TUDN journalist, Francisco Arredondo, the new tournament would be called Expansion League MX Sub-23, with the reason that each of the teams of the top division have a corresponding club in the second division. Consequently, the Under-20 category would disappear to be unified with the Expansion League.
Another of the important changes concerns which teams are promoted and the ones that would drop down a division. The team that finishes as champions of the second tier will play a promotion play-off against the team that finishes bottom of the top division with the winner being promoted and the losing team remaining where they are.
