LIGUE 1
What do Paris Saint-Germain need against Lorient to win Ligue 1 today?
PSG are on the brink of securing head coach Luis Enrique’s first Ligue 1 title, and Real Madrid-bound Kylian Mbappé's last.
Since the start of the 2012/13 season, Paris Saint-Germain have won nine of 11 Ligue 1 titles and are on the brink of another as they face Lorient on Wednesday. Luis Enrique’s side, who will face Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final of the Champions League, can give Kylian Mbappé, seemingly set for Real Madrid, a parting gift by sealing a 12th league championship today.
PSG can clinch title with win in Lorient, depending on Monaco
PSG visit Lorient in Wednesday’s early kick-off and will move onto 69 points from their 30 fixtures with a victory in Brittany. Monaco, who are in action at home to fourth-place Lille later today, are the only team that can still stop the Parisians, or at least delay the inevitable.
Monaco started the day 11 points behind the leaders and must beat Lille if PSG also pick up three points in Lorient. A draw or a defeat at Stade Louis II will end the title race, if there even was one.
Would a draw be enough for PSG?
Mbappé and Co cannot officially clinch the title with a draw, even if their closest challengers were to lose. That would leave the capital club on 67 points and Monaco on 55, with 12 points left on the table.
Goal difference is the first tiebreaker in Ligue 1 and PSG’s is vastly superior; they went into matchday 30 on +44 compared to Monaco’s +17.
The chances of the team from the principality making around 30 goals in four matches is obviously completely unrealistic, but PSG would nevertheless have to wait to be crowned champions.
