What does the future hold for Sergio Ramos?
Al Khelaifi wants Ramos to sign a new deal and the defender could lower his salary to stay at PSG.
Sergio Ramos could sign with PSG another season, although nothing has been confirmed in Doha yet. The Ligue 1 side are seriously considering offering him an extension as Nasser Al Khelaifi is pleased with his performances, especially after the Champions League games against Bayern Munich. According to L’Équipe, Al Khelaifi is in favour of handing Ramos a new deal.
The Spanish international earns around €800,000 gross per month and PSG would not be able to offer him a contract extension under the same conditions as now. Ramos, aware of this, would be willing to reduce his salary to remain with the capital club for one more season. The squad lacks leaders in the dressing room and the player from Seville has emerged as one of the heavyweights in Christophe Galtier’s side.
PSG focused on Ligue 1
Luis Campos, who will wait until the end of the season to send him an offer, will have his say in Ramos’ renewal. PSG’s sporting adviser prefers to wait until June before making a decision on the matter. His performances this season, as well as getting over the injuries that weighed him down in his first year in Paris, play in his favour, but nothing will be definitive until PSG secure their eleventh Ligue 1 title, which is the priority objective at the moment.
Campos wants the team to continue playing in a three-centre-back system, another reason that could see Ramos stay at the club. With Presnel Kimpembe injured until October, Milan Skriniar’s (agreement in principle to sign for free in June) groin issue, and a shortage of centre-backs, the defender brings leadership and experience to the side’s backline in Europe and domestically.
Optimism over Ramos’ renewal has increased in recent weeks, but PSG are still looking for centre-backs to add quality to their squad. Among those being monitored are Aymeric Laporte, who has lost his place at Manchester City, and Lucas Hernández, whose future at Bayern remains up in the air.
