What is César Montes’ Espanyol release clause? Will he play in the Premier League?
The defender has a contract with the Spanish side until 2028, but there are several clubs that have Montes on their minds.
RCD Espanyol’s season has gone from bad to worse and they currently find themselves just one place above the foot of the table, well in the relegation zone. Although there is still time to save the season and not experience relegation, the club has no margin for error in what remains of the campaign.
If a relegation were to happen, Espanyol would have to say goodbye to their top players and one of them is the Mexican central defender, César Montes. The former Rayados de Monterrey defender signed with the Spanish club until 2028 and the only way for him to leave the club is for another team to pay his release clause.
“Taking into account the deal that was agreed, and the release clause that the contract has, [Montes’ departure] could be a good sale for Espanyol whether we like it or not. Right now, the team needs to sell players. It could be this summer, but he could take another step in his career’’, a source mentioned to AS.
Montes is attracting interest from England
As AS learned, the figure that a club would have to pay to activate the release clause is €33 million. Any club that want the defender before 2028 will have to pay that amount in order to secure one of Espanyol’s and LaLiga’s most intriguing assets.
On the other hand, if Espanyol manage to stay in the Primera División, there is less requirement for them to listen to offers for the Mexican central defender.
