They toiled for much of the game but Manchester City finally overcame German opponents Borussia Dortmund thanks to two late goals in their Champions League fixture. The first, a long-range wallop from unlikely scorer John Stones, was swiftly followed by a much more likely scorer; Erling Haaland.

City’s new golden boy was in the game very little but made the difference when it counted, lunging to stab a delectable cross for the winner. It keeps up his stunning record in European football’s premier continent-spanning competition. Haaland now holds the record for the most goals in 21 Champions League games, 26 in 21.

Haaland was already beyond the rest of the goalscoring field, past and present in terms of Champions League goals. Before kick off on Wednesday he also held the record for most goals scored in 20 games in the competition with an almighty 25 in just 20 games. Legendary Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy follows in a distant second with 16 goals in 20 games.

What about his overall scoring record?

The 22-year-old has only failed to find the net in the league once so far this season and has already broken two Premier League records for the highest number of goals scored in August and the fewest number of games needed to score two top-flight hat-tricks, beating the previous mark set by Demba Ba by 16 matches.

Since his move to Red Bull Salzburg in Austria five years ago the Norwegian dangerman has scored a combined 89 league goals in 89 league games for the Austrian outfit alongside Borussia Dortmund and now Manchester City.
