What is Lionel Messi’s record against Colombia? Games, goals, assists…
Messi’s Argentina will face James Rodríguez’s Colombia in the 2024 Copa América final in Miami Gardens on Sunday July 14.
Argentina will face Colombia in the final of the Copa América 2024 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Sunday July 14. Lionel Messi, Ángel Di María and Co hope to win the competition for the second time in succession with the World Cup holders, while James Rodríguez will be looking to cap a superb tournament by lifting his first ever international trophy.
Julián Álvarez and Messi were on target as La Albiceleste downed Canada in the semifinals, giving Argentina the chance to join Spain (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012) as the only countries to have won three major tournaments in a row. It would be the perfect finale for Di María, who will retire from international duty after Sunday’s game.
They are unlikely to have an easy time of it against Colombia, however. Led by the brilliant Rodríguez, one of the players of the tournament, Los Cafeteros are unbeaten in 28 games. One more and they will win the Copa América for only the second time following their sole 2001 triumph.
What is Lionel Messi’s record against Colombia?
Messi has faced Colombia 11 times, recording four victories, five draws and two defeats. A positive record overall, although a win rate of just 36.4% means there is plenty of room for improvement.
The 37-year-old has started 10 of those games, the first of which came in the Copa América 2007, and the most recent in the semifinals of the 2021 tournament. Argentina won via a penalty shootout, with Messi scoring the first spot-kick.
The Inter Miami star has scored three goals and provided another three for his teammates in his 11 previous appearances against Colombia. As ever, the Argentina captain will almost certainly play a key role if his country is to complete a hat-trick of trophy in Miami Gardens.
