Liverpool beat Bournemouth 9-0 on Saturday afternoon to set a new club record for the biggest win in the Premier League. The previous high-water mark was a 7-0 win over Crystal Palace away, set on 19 December 2020.

The 9-0 win for Liverpool also equals the record for the biggest win ever in the Premier League, set by Manchester United against Ipswich Town on March 4, 1995. Man Utd repeated the feat against Southampton in ‘21, while the Saints were also shellacked by Leicester that same season, in October.

The 9-0 win also equals Liverpool’s biggest 1st division win at Anfield, against Crystal Palace in September 1989.

Klopp’s side set the new record with goals from Luis Díaz (2′, 84′,) Harvey Elliot (5′), Trent Alexander-Arnold (27′), Roberto Firmino (30′, 61′), Virgil Van Dijk (44′), Mepham (45′ (p))) and Fabio Carvalho (79′).

Today’s nine goals were the same number as Liverpool had managed in their previous five Premier League games combined. The win moves them up to eighth as things stand, with several teams still to play this weekend.

Not Liverpool’s biggest ever win

The thrashing of Bournemouth however is not Liverpool’s biggest ever win. That came against Stromsgodset in the European Cup Winners’ Cup on 17 September 1974, with an 11-0 tonking of the Norwegian outfit.

It’s also not Liverpool’s biggest ever league win. Back in 1899, in the second division, they scored 10 against Rotherham Town, though did concede 1.

Bournemouth’s record Premier League defeat

Bournemouth had recorded a 9-0 defeat in the league before, against Lincoln City, on 18 December 1982, but that was down in Division 3. Their previous worst Premier League spanking was a 5-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Boxing Day 2018.
