What lies ahead for Leo Messi and Argentina in 2024

The reigning World Cup holders will get a chance to defend their Copa America title this summer in the United States.

Following their World Cup win in Lusail (Qatar) in December 2022, the Argentine national team followed up the triumph with an excellent 2023 by winning nine of the 10 matches played as Lionel Scaloni’s men top the South American qualifying table with 15 points.

2024 will certainly provide a stern test for the Albiceleste with the side out to defend their Copa America title which gets underway in the USA on 20 June. It’s also expected that the AFA will line up two friendly games during the March international break.

Argentina are the top seed in Group A which also includes Peru, Chile and Canada or Trinidad and Tobago with both CONCACAF sides set to battle it out in a March playoff to see who will progress to the Copa and face Argentina in the inaugural match at the Copa América with the contest set to be played at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Towards the latter part of 2024, Scaloni’s men will resume the South American qualifiers ahead of the 2026 World Cup where the national side have won five of the six matches and lead the table with 15 points.

At first, the side captained by Leo Messi will face Chile at home and five days later, they will travel to face Colombia.

In October, they will play Venezuela and Bolivia with the year culminating with November games against Paraguay and Peru.
