Pumas are staring down a pivotal moment in their season. Star striker Guillermo “Memote” Martínez is set to miss several weeks after suffering a fifth metatarsal injury, leaving Los Universitarios without their main attacking threat just as the tournament enters its decisive phase.

Now, the club’s front office and coaching staff are weighing two options: promote promising academy product Santiago López or rely on the experience of José Juan Macías, who was brought in as an emergency reinforcement. It’s worth noting that Pumas had pursued French forward Anthony Martial, but he ultimately chose to sign with Monterrey.

Option 1: Homegrown talent from the academy

At just 20 years old, López is one of the brightest prospects to emerge from Pumas’ youth system. He’s impressed in the U-23 squad and has made notable appearances with Mexico’s youth national teams. His performances have caught the eye of head coach Efraín Juárez, who has already invited him to train with the senior squad.

Still, the pressure of Liga MX and the demand for immediate results make this a risky move - especially with Pumas fighting for a spot in the playoffs. So far this season, López has logged just 55 minutes across three matches.

Option 2: José Juan Macías – A shot at redemption?

The other alternative is Macías, a player once hailed as one of Mexico’s top young forwards. Now 26, he is still searching for the form that made him a standout earlier in his career. His current stats in the Apertura 2025: two goals in five appearances, totaling 128 minutes on the pitch.

With “Memote” sidelined, Pumas must act fast to fill the void up front. The decision comes down to sticking with their tradition of developing talent or opting for a more immediate fix through a seasoned signing. Whichever path they choose, it’s a call that could define the remainder of their campaign.

Pumas will face Chivas Guadalajara this weekend in what promises to be a crucial matchup.
