Real Madrid can confirm their presence in the 2023/24 Champions League knockout stages when they take on Braga today.

Having won three games out of three so far in this season’s competition, Madrid host Braga sitting top of Group C, six points clear of their third-placed opponents. Union Berlin are bottom with no points, and Napoli lie second with six.

What result do Real Madrid need to qualify?

Madrid will make sure of last-16 qualification - with two group matches still to play - if they win or draw against Braga. Either result would give the 14-time European champions an unassailable lead over the Portuguese club and Union Berlin.

It will still be possible for Braga to finish level on points with Madrid if the teams draw today, but Los Blancos would finish above Artur Jorge’s men regardless, as they would have the better head-to-head record. On matchday three two weeks ago, Madrid were 2-1 winners in Portugal.

It would be significant, at this stage of the season, to wrap up the group stage in four games,” Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti told reporters on Tuesday.

Madrid yet to miss UCL knockouts this century

Madrid are on the verge of extending a nearly three-decade run of uninterrupted qualification from the Champions League group phase. The LaLiga giants have not been absent from the latter stages since the 1996/97 season, which was also the last time they weren’t involved in Europe’s top club competition.

If Madrid seal their last-16 berth, it will be their 27th successive appearance in the Champions League knockouts.
