The Derby della Capitale between Lazio and José Mourinho’s Rome in Serie A ended with a narrow victory for the Biancocelesti and tensions running extremely high on and off the field. Three red cards were shown by referee Davide Massa, one in the first half for Roma defender Roger Ibáñez and two immediately after the final whistle for Lazio’s Adam Marusic and opponent Bryan Cristante. But things didn’t end there, with the face-off between the two sets of players continuing in the locker rooms at Stadio Olimpico. Italian sports newspaper Corriere dello Sport revealed that one player had told them: “It’s a pity there were no cameras. You would have had a great time”.

After a stormy end to the match, the disputes intensified as the Lazio players walked past the Roma dressing room on the way back to their own, which is not usually the case. Verbals from certain players (reportedly Luis Alberto and Alessio Romagnoli) provoked a response from the opposing side, with Lazio president Claudio Lotito attempting to calm the situation down, only to become embroiled in his own battle with Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto and manager Mourinho, who was suspended for the game.

Mourinho: “What the f**k are you looking at?”

According to Corriere dello Sport, Mourinho exploded, asking Lotito, “What the f**k are you looking at?”, to which he received the reply, “What the f**k are you looking at? I’m the president of the Lazio, this is my home and I can go wherever I want. You are suspended and shouldn’t be here”. Things escaleted further from there with more players and coaching staff intervening, before all parties returned to their respective changing rooms after a few minutes.

Lazio’s Luis Aberto: “They talked trash but now they have to shut up”

Speaking to DAZN, Lazio’s Spanish midfielder Luis Alberto added further fuel to the fire: “When you talk trash before a game and then you lose, you have to shut up. They talked too much, as they always do before games and now they’re f***ed... And they have to shut up”. The former Liverpool player stuck the boot in further: “They didn’t come to play the match, they just came to talk trash and provoke us. We were the only ones who played, and we won. They like to put on a show on the bench and they kept it going in the locker room. I, on the other hand, am thinking of going to dinner with my family, having a glass of wine and celebrating”.
