Drama was high last Monday as Wrexham AFC recorded a famous win over direct rivals Notts County to edge towards automatic promotion to the English National League as they secured a 3-2 win. The drama was accentuated in stoppage time as the visitors were awarded a penalty kick in the 97th minute but veteran keeper Ben Foster proved to be the hero for the Welsh side as he guessed correctly pushing the ball past the post to save the points for the home side.

Watching on from the director’s box were club owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney who were overcome with emotion following the spectacle that unfolded at the Racecourse Ground. Reynolds admitted post game that he had never experienced such drama stating that ‘he was unable to quantify what just happened’ and was keen to pay tribute to Notts County for helping to ‘create drama the likes you never see in a movie’.

Since taking over at the historic in 2021, the pair’s Hollywood profile and the success of the ‘fly on the wall’ Disney+ documentary ‘Welcome to Wrexham has seen the club to build a strong global following.

Understanding the Vanarama National League

Wrexham currently play in the Vanarama National League, which is England’s fifth tier of football. The Premier League sits at the top of the pyramid, with the Championship below. Then, there is League One and League Two as the third and fourth tiers in what is essentially a semi-professional category. The final episode of Welcome To Wrexham ended with the heartbreak of missing out on promotion as the Red Dragons lost out in the play-off final to Grimsby.

This season has been a two-horse-race with Wrexham and Notts County running away with the league with both clubs tied on 100 points ahead on Monday’s crunch game. The win sees Wrexham lead the table on 103 points with just four games left all season and only the top team securing promotion. Notts County hold 100 points (have played one game more than their direct rivals) but do currently have a better goal difference which is the deciding factor should both teams end up level on points.

When can Wrexham achieve promotion?

Assuming both teams win their remaining games, Wrexham could be crowned champions and promoted on matchday 45 of the campaign at home to Boreham Wood. The Red Dragons face three teams desperately seeking points as Barnet and Boreham Wood hint for a play off place and Yeovil anxious to avoid the drop into the sixth tier.

Notts County’s next game is a tricky home test against play-off chasing Woking but have two, relatively easy final two games as they play already relegated Maidstone and mid table York City.

Wrexham are in pole position to secure promotion, but more ‘Hollywood’ drama cannot be ruled out in this epic battle to secure a foothold in the English professional system.
