Nine months on from the start of the season, a historic year of MLS action has reached the finale. Every year the champion is crowned in MLS Cup, a one-off meeting between the winners of the Eastern and Western Conferences.

This year’s championship game will be held on Saturday, December 7 with kickoff set for 4pm ET / 1pm PT. Whatever the score after 90 minutes the winner will be decided on the day, with extra-time and penalties employed if the teams are level.

The New York Red Bulls were the first team to book their place in the 2024 MLS Cup, continuing their astonishing postseason form with a hard-fought road win over Orlando City. Speaking after the game, head coach Sandro Schwarz spoke in glowing terms of his team’s performances in the playoffs.

“I’m very proud of the whole group. It’s amazing to create this atmosphere and also with this fighting spirit. Amazing the last couple of weeks and now we have one week more and it’s not done,” Scharz added.

They will be joined by Western Conference winners LA Galaxy, who beat a resolute Seattle Sounders to return to MLS Cup for the first time in a decade. The Galaxy were made to work for their win but a sharp through-ball from Riqui Puig and clinical strike from Dejan Joveljic finally broke the Sounders' resolve in the final minutes of normal time.

Where will the 2024 MLS Cup be held?

As is the case with each round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, the higher-seeded team will be given home advantage. Seedings are based on each team’s regular season points tally.

This year’s MLS Cup will be held at either Dignity Sports Health Park (LA Galaxy) as the highest-ranked of the two teams. Heading into the Conference Finals both teams in the West were ranked above the two from the East, ensuring that MLS Cup would be played on the West Coast for the third time in four years.

The Galaxy will go into the final game as favourites against an NYRB side that have struggled for consistency in 2024. The Red Bulls will also have to contend with a cross-country trip, devoid of the home support that can be such a factor for them. Historically the venue has a major baring on the eventual winners; six of the past seven MLS Cup finals have been won by the team with home advantage. If the Red Bulls are to lift MLS Cup next Saturday, they’ll have to continue their incredible record away from home.
