Club Universidad Nacional, or Pumas as they are more commonly known, are Barcelona’s rivals at this year’s Trofeo Joan Gamper as the pre-season tournament celebrates its 57th edition. It will be just the second time that Barça have invited Mexican opponents to take part in their summer showpiece - Club León were guests in 2014 but were no match for their hosts, losing the game 6-0 with Neymar and Munir bagging a brace each. Barça has originally invited Jose Mourinho’s Roma to play this year’s Joan Gamper but the Italians decided to withdraw and rescinded the contract without giving a reason.

The women’s team, Barcelona Femení will also contest the Joan Gamper Trophy - the second time that both the men’s and women’s teams have been involved. They will face Montpellier on Tuesday 23 August at Estadi Johan Cruyff.

Few teams have wrested the trophy away from Barcelona since the tournament began in 1966 - just 11 visiting clubs have beaten the hosts and lifted the cup, the most recent being Sampdoria in 2012.

The Trofeo Joan Gamper, named in honour of Barcelona’s founder Joan Gamper, is the chance for fans to see the first team, along with all of the new summer signings in action before the new campaign starts. This year, recent arrivals Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessié together with any newcomers (Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski have also been linked) will get their first taste of Camp Nou in the final pre-season friendly.
