When will Lionel Messi return from injury? Inter Miami return date
After three months away, the Miami captain has returned to training and could soon take to the field.
Lionel Messi’s long-awaited return to MLS action will not happen against Chicago Fire this weekend, but the Inter Miami star will soon be available.
The Herons have been understandably cautious with Messi’s rehabilitation, giving him the time to recover at his own pace. Having already secured their place in the playoffs, Miami really have no need to rush him back.
However Inter Miami supporters, and legions of Messi fans around the world, will be eager to see him back on the field. The Argentine has only made 12 MLS appearances for Inter Miami so far this season but has contributed 12 goals and 13 assists in that time.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, teammate Marcelo Weigandt was positive about Messi’s recovery: “He is training hard. Having him on the team is incredible—everyone would want Messi on their side. It’s extraordinary, and we need to stay calm. When he is there, everything is incredible.”
When will Lionel Messi play his next game?
Having already qualified for the playoffs Miami head coach Tata Martino can turn his attention to the off-season. He may look to rest some of his veteran stars as the regular season approaches the finale, ensuring that they are at full fitness for an assault on MLS Cup.
When asked about Messi’s fitness on Friday, Martino said that he is “getting better and better,” but “still hasn’t received medical clearance” for his return to competitive games.
“He began training several weeks ago, initially with the medical staff and physical trainers, and then he gradually joined some parts of the training with the team. We are still evaluating his progress,” Martino added.
Messi’s return date will be dictated by the Inter Miami fixture schedule, which gives them a two-week break after the trip to Chicago Fire on Saturday. After a weekend off Miami will return to home turf to host Philadelphia Union on Saturday, September 14. If all goes well, that could be Messi’s long-awaited return date.
