Rayo Vallecano vs Real Madrid: LaLiga preview
Madrid went into matchday six of the Champions League with their prospects of progressing from the league phase in the balance, but eased fears of an early European exit by edging Atalanta 3-2 in a thriller on Tuesday. Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham were on target in Bergamo, where the only black mark on the night was a hamstring injury picked up by Mbappé, who faces around 10 days out of action.
Madrid’s key triumph in Italy followed last weekend’s commanding LaLiga victory at Girona, where Carlo Ancelotti’s men won 3-0 through goals by Mbappé, Bellingham and Arda Güler.
Coupled with Barça’s 2-2 draw with Real Betis later in the evening, Madrid’s win at Montilivi left them two points behind the leaders, whose next LaLiga match sees them host Leganés 24 hours after Los Blancos visit Rayo.
Madrid also have a game in hand on Barça, after their matchday-12 game at Valencia was postponed due to the deadly floods on the east coast of Spain. That clash will now be played on Friday January 3.
Rayo, meanwhile, sit 12th in LaLiga, having beaten Valencia 1-0 last Saturday thanks to Pathé Ciss’s first-half goal at Mestalla.
At home, however, Los Franjirrojos have not won in the league since late October - a 1-0 victory over Alavés that is their only triumph in their past five top-flight games at Vallecas. Rayo’s last two LaLiga outings on home turf have brought defeats to Las Palmas and Athletic.
