Which club has more wins in the Súper Clásico and what were the scores of the last five games?

Club América and Chivas Guadalajara meet in the Liga MX on Saturday in what is the 245th edition of Mexico’s Súper Clásico.

Club América welcome Chivas Guadalajara to the Estadio Azteca for Mexico’s Súper Clásico this weekend, with the hosts hoping to stay top of the Liga MX Apertura standings on matchday 15. Tigres’ defeat to Puebla on Friday means América are already guaranteed a place in the playoffs, but if they still lead the table come the end of the regular season, they will secure themselves a quarter-final tie against the lowest-ranked postseason team. The in-form Águilas can also extend their 10-game unbeaten streak, a sequence that brought nine wins in a row before Wednesday’s 3-3 draw with Santos Laguna.

As for arch rivals Chivas, Ricardo Cadena’s men sit seventh in the table and appear set to miss out on automatic qualification for the postseason, but - a heavy midweek defeat to Tigres aside - the Rebaño Sagrado are on an eminently useful run of results themselves. Having overcome a disastrous start to the season, Guadalajara have now won five of their last eight Liga MX games. The visitors must make it six in nine if they’re to stand any chance of avoiding going into a play-in tie for a place in the playoffs.

Súper Clásico: overall H2H tally

While their immediate Liga MX fortunes will be the clubs’ overwhelming concern on Saturday, there is also the question of where they each stand in their overall head-to-head rivalry. As in this term’s Apertura tournament, it is Chivas who are playing catch-up. In 244 meetings since the early 1940s - including 38 friendlies - América have accrued 88 wins to Guadalajara’s 77, while there have been 79 draws.

América get the better of Chivas on the big stage

Notably, América have made a habit of beating Chivas when it has really mattered: in 13 two-legged clashes in the Mexican league playoffs, the men from Mexico City have been aggregate winners 10 times. The most famous of those playoff ties - indeed, the clubs’ most famous meeting full stop - was the 1983/84 league final, dubbed by the Mexican media as the ‘Final of the Century’. América’s 5-3 aggregate triumph clinched the fourth of their total of 13 national championships - a tally that also puts them ahead of Guadalajara, who have 12.

There have also been four Súper Clásicos at the semi-final stage of the league playoffs, with two aggregate wins apiece. Most recently, América triumphed 2-0 over two legs in the last four of the Apertura 2016, a victory that earned them revenge for Chivas’ 2-0 aggregate win at the same stage of the Apertura 10 years earlier.

Other major meetings between the teams include two Mexican Cup final clashes in 1954 and 1955, both won by América, and a CONCACAF Champions’ Cup first-round tie in 1985, which also brought victory for Los Azul-Cremas. Thirteen years later, the clubs again met in international competition, having both qualified for the Copa Libertadores after Mexican teams were invited to take part in South America’s elite continental club tournament for the first time. Continuing the pattern of América beating Chivas on the biggest stage, the capital club won home and away (2-0 and 1-0) when they were paired together in the group stage.

Eight years since either club won successive Súper Clásicos

However, while América have often had the upper hand in the highest-profile Súper Clásicos, the overall win-loss figures point to a rivalry in which Los Americanistas have had the edge, but hardly overwhelmingly so. Recent results have certainly been very even. América and Chivas’ last two meetings have both ended scoreless, and neither team has managed consecutive Liga MX victories over the other since América won three in a row between April 2013 and March 2014.

In the last five Súper Clásicos, it is Chivas who have narrowly had the better of their rivals, picking up two wins (both in the Guardianes 2020 semi-finals) and suffering just the one defeat. That said, the away stats look a little less favourable for Guadalajara. They are winless in their last five trips to face América at the Azteca, and last came out on top there in Liga MX in August 2016, Isaác Brizulea scoring twice in a 3-0 triumph.

América and Chivas’ last five meetings (all Liga MX):

  • 13/03/2022: Chivas 0-0 América
  • 26/09/2021: América 0-0 Chivas
  • 15/03/2021: Chivas 0-3 América (Martín 45, 75, Córdova 79)
  • 29/11/2020: América 1-2 Chivas (Martín 75; Calderón 31, 72)
  • 26/11/2020: Chivas 1-0 América (Calderón 81)
