Inter Milan, Liverpool and Porto all qualified for the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday, so 12 teams are now through to the knockout rounds after matchday five of the group stage.

Wednesday’s Champions League action: a summary

Group A

Having thumped Rangers 7-1 last time out in the Champions League, Liverpool rubber-stamped their passage to the last 16 with a 3-0 win over Ajax. Mohamed Salah, Darwin Núñez and Harvey Elliot were on target for the Reds, who can still top the group - but need a big win against Napoli on matchday six. The already-through Italians, who beat Rangers 3-0 on Wednesday, will top Group A as long as they avoid a four-goal defeat at Anfield.

Group B

Club Brugge, who confirmed their qualification from Group B on matchday four, lost 4-0 at home to Porto - and that result sent the Portuguese through to the last 16, with the help of a last-gasp Atlético Madrid penalty miss. With Porto beating Brugge, Atlético needed a victory over Bayer Leverkusen to keep their hopes of qualification alive, but Yannick Carrasco spurned a 99th-minute spot-kick for Los Rojiblancos as it ended 2-2 in Spain. To guarantee a third-placed finish ahead of Leverkusen, Atleti must now defeat Porto on matchday six.

Group C

In one of the day’s early Champions League kickoffs, Inter’s 4-0 win over Viktoria Plzen confirmed the Nerazzurri’s qualification for the last 16 - and condemned LaLiga giants Barcelona to a second straight group-stage exit. Barça, who later lost 3-0 at home to Bayern Munich, are certain to finish third and drop into the Europa League. Bayern’s comfortable victory at the Camp Nou confirmed the Bundesliga champions as Group C winners.

Group D

Nothing has been decided in Group D, where only two points separate first and fourth. Leaders Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1 with second-placed Sporting CP on Wednesday, while Eintracht Frankfurt beat Marseille 2-1 to leapfrog the Frenchmen into third. In the final round of group games, Spurs will be guaranteed qualification if they draw away to Marseille, and a point will also do Sporting when they meet Frankfurt in Portugal. The Germans must win to qualify.

If Tottenham lose in France, a draw in Lisbon would lead to a three-way tie between Spurs, Sporting and Frankfurt. Were this to happen, Sporting would progress in second as they have the best record in games involving the trio - and Marseille would rise from bottom to win the group!
