We’re only a couple of games into Liga MX’s 2023 Clausura tournament but some interesting statistics have already some to light. Chivas, Pachuca and Santos are the three clubs that have given the most game time to Mexican players in the opening two rounds of the 2023 Clausura tournament.

The fact that Guadalajara tops the list will come as a surprise to nobody given their long-standing tradition of only fielding Mexican players, which now includes players born to Mexican parents. 2022 Apertura winners Pachuca have also become famed for giving precedence to players from their youth academy – at the expense of results, some would argue, following their 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Tigres in matchday two of the new Liga MX competition. Completing the top three is Santos, whose coach Eduardo Fentanes has shown plenty of faith to home-grown talent during his time in charge.

Mexicans account for 1,968 of the total minutes played by Chivas players in their games against Monterrey and Atlético San Luis, well ahead of Pachuca (1,492), who have faced Puebla and Tigres so far. Santos are just behind with 1,299 minutes in games against Tigres and Pumas, narrowly ahead of Necaxa, whose Mexican players have accumulated 1,285 minutes in games against San Luis and León, both of which have ended in defeat.

  • Pachuca: 1492
  • Santos: 1299
  • Necaxa: 1285

  • Pumas: 1112

  • Tijuana: 661
  • Mazatlán: 579
  • León: 542
  • Atlas: 454

Given that Mazatlán, León, Atlas and Toluca have only played one 2023 Clausura match as things stand, it’s no surprise that they find themselves propping up the table.
